Douglas L. Starns, DDS

Dr. Starns has an up-to-date, but long-established, dental practice with an excellent reputation. He sees patients of all ages and, due to his advanced training, manages most patients’ needs, in-house. The office has its own dental lab, providing convenience and quick turn around on our dental prosthetic cases. He is a person of honesty and integrity and was the chairman of the honor counsel for his dental school. Dr. Starns prides himself on building ties with patients and the community, and considers his patients part of his extended family.

As a graduate of the University of Virginia (undergraduate and post-doctorate), Dr. Starns enjoys following U. Va. Athletics. Until recently, he coached youth soccer for the Soccer Organization of Charlottesville and Albemarle (SOCA). He is very active in his church and is a volunteer dentist for the Charlottesville Free Clinic, the Virginia Dental Association’s Donated Dental Services Program, and the Mission for Mercy Project in Wise, Virginia.

He has lectured on the effects of periodontal disease on cardiovascular health at the University of Virginia, Department of Graduate Nursing. He has also been featured on the local news speaking on dental health related issues.

Hobbies include yard work, hiking, kayaking, reading, and doing much of his own lab work. His wife, Deborah, is a dental hygienist in the practice. His eldest daughter, Alexandra S. Wood, DDS, completed her training and joined the practice in June of 2015. He and his wife have three other daughters, all pursuing careers in public service.

Dr. Alexandra S. Wood, D.D.S

Dr. Alexandra Wood was born and raised in Charlottesville, graduating from Western Albemarle High School in 2006. She then attended the University of North Carolina at Wilmington to pursue her interest in Marine Biology. During a semester abroad in Townsville, Australia, she decided to follow in her father’s footsteps and attend dental school. After graduating with distinction from UNCW, she attended the VCU School of Dentistry, graduating at the top of her class in 2015.

Dr. Wood serves the Charlottesville community by volunteering at the Charlottesville Free Dental Clinic, and provides dental care to underserved areas across Virginia through Mission of Mercy dental projects.

On the weekends, Dr. Wood enjoys spending time with her husband and children on their farm in Free Union.
